FIFA 12 review [Xperia Play]
FIFA returns for what may prove to be its final match on the Xperia Play, but is it still worth the price of admission?
EA’s best-selling FIFA series is older than many modern gamers, and with age comes experience. The franchise has enjoyed yearly updates since its inception in 1993 (sometimes seeing more than one game a year, in fact) and as you might expect, it boasts all the hallmarks of a true veteran.
If you’re used to the domestic versions on the 360 and PS3 then your jaw will probably drop when you first fire up the game on Sony Ericsson’s phone. The control system has been replicated with astonishing accuracy, allowing FIFA to break free of the imprecise touch-screen hell it has languished in for the past few years.
Although the Xperia Play is coming to the end of its lifespan, it proves its worth here. Playing FIFA 12 on this phone is a joy; compare it to the iPhone version and it’s like chalk and cheese. Whereas the iOS edition boasts an inventive but ultimately awkward touch-screen control method, the Xperia Play version adopts a more traditional configuration, and is vastly better as a result.
The silky-smooth controls combine excellently with FIFA 12’s augmented game mechanics. You can string passes, log speculative balls over the heads of defenders and dispatch through-balls with pinpoint accuracy, all thanks to the deep and intricate game engine.
